5 Questions to Ask If You Want to Keep Your Existing Team

Your team members are the heart of your business. Understanding them on a deeper level can transform your company culture and long-term success. Let’s discuss five powerful questions that can unveil valuable insights about your employees, fostering a stronger connection and encouraging them to stay with you for the long term.

Navigating the Conversation.

Before you launch into these questions, let’s set the stage for meaningful dialogue. Remember, this isn’t an interrogation. It is a conversation aimed at understanding your employees better as individuals and human beings; providing support to grow, do better on their role and enjoy their career with you.

Before you sit down and ask these questions, make sure you pre-frame it with each of your employees. You may organize a time to meet up for 20 minutes catch up. Let them know that you’re invested in their success and that you would like to explore ways to enhance their experience within the company. Soften the introduction to make it sounds more like a conversation rather than you sitting them down for some questioning.

The following are the five questions that can be inquired in any order:

  • What can we provide you in your role to do your best work every day?
You may already have been providing them the tools and. By viewing their work from their perspective, you can better tailor the work environment to ensure their success becomes a consistent reality every day.
  • What matter most in your life?
You are not necessarily here to guide them towards a certain decision, particularly in their personal life. Understanding their values and aspirations outside of work is vital. Inquire to understand about their family, partner, goals, and objectives outside of work. Do they want to buy a home? Do they want to travel? Do they want to spend more time with their kids? Do they want to experience more adventure? Understanding their life priorities can help you align their career experience with their life objectives, creating a more holistic and fulfilling work-life balance.
  • Where would you like to see yourself in 12 Months?
Prompt them to envision their progress within the organization. This encourages forward thinking and highlights their aspirations, allowing you to support their progress accordingly. We all love to move forward, grow, and develop in some way, shape or form. This insight will not be available without asking the question.
  • What would make this the ultimate workplace to work at?
Uncover their dream work environment. The person may not have the answer right away. But asking this question is akin to planting the seed for better insight in the future while showing interest in getting their feedback. Their responses could range from tangible perks to intangible cultural shifts such as new pick-up truck every three years to barbeque and beer every Friday afternoon. Appreciate their responses by thanking them for their input. You may not want to promise them to have everything in place, but this query not only gathers feedback but also provides collective intelligence on what are going on in the company.
  • Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Provide an open-ended platform for additional thoughts. This shows you’re genuinely interested in hearing from them and valuing their perspectives. You could set up a confidential closed communication between you and the employee if this facilitates them to share their thoughts.

Creating Stronger Connections.

These five questions, framed within the context of a supportive conversation, can unveil powerful insights about your employees. As you invest time in understanding their needs and aspirations, you’ll create a bond that goes beyond the transactional nature of work. Your genuine interest and commitment to their growth can transform their perception of you as a leader and foster loyalty in the process. Someone who they want to be involved with for their career ahead.

If you need guidance in implementing these strategies or further support, please be in touch. Building a workplace that truly values its employees is a journey worth taking, and we’re with you every step of the way.
